Your child’s first dental visit can be a source of stress if you are unsure how to coach your child or have some dental anxiety yourself. Our team at Jon Ormson DDS wants to help you ensure a positive experience for your child so that they feel comfortable at all dental visits. We invite you to utilize the following general guidelines in preparation for your child’s pediatric dental visit:
First, you can work with our team to schedule an appointment that doesn’t cross over into your child’s usual nap time so that they are well-rested during the visit. Similarly, we advise against having older children visit the dentist instead of attending their extracurricular activities so that they aren’t feeling upset.
Second, we encourage you to set a good example of being calm and cheerful at the dental office so that your child doesn’t associate dental care with worry. You are welcome to schedule your own professional teeth cleaning right before your child’s so that they can see you sitting in the dental chair and interacting with our team.
Third, if you have any personal anxiety about the dentist, we encourage you to address these prior to your visit so that your child doesn’t develop similar anxiety from witnessing your apprehension. You can practice calming exercises such as listening to relaxing music or meditating so that you are in a calm state of mind when you see the dentist.
